The
Pyman Cup celebrated its Centenary in 2004. It was back in 1903 that Harold
English Pyman, a West Hartlepool ship-owner who was also a referee, presented
this trophy for competition among the junior clubs in the area.
Originally it was competed for on a League basis with the Leagues lasting until 1926, when it was suspended by the Durham County RFU due to allegations of payment irregularity over the movement of players.
Except for one season, since that date, the Cup has been
competed for on a knockout basis bythe 1st XVs of the Junior Clubs and the
2nd XVs of the Senior Clubs. With the advent of the League system, admission
is now clarified as the 1st XV of Clubs at Level 9 and below together with
the 2nd XVs of Clubs at Level 8 and above.
Around 1906 the first Pyman League XV was selected to play the Tyneside League, this was the name given to the 2nd Division of the Durham/Northumberland Leagues then running and divided in Division 1 for Senior Clubs and Division 2 for Junior Clubs. The League XVs are seen as the forerunners of Colts and now Clubs XVs that feature the Counties fixture cards.
The competition today is played for a Wednesday evening Competition and though for many years it ran without any formal Competition Rules, the District Union has finally adopted a set of Competition Rules.
